β β β β β Contrary to the many negative reviews here I had a smooth and good experience with Avis. I got a car without prior reservation, service was efficient, new car + "zero responsibility" terms, return smooth and hassle-free.
Wish driving in Florence was that easy.

β β β β β We rented a vehicle through Avis today for 10 days and they informed us that we were upgraded to a better one. We were happy BUT when we collect it, it was full of scratches, damages and the cabin was smelling tobacco. We informed the employee and he just noted in the paper ? That' s it. They did not replace it.

β β β β β I rented a vehicle in Florence for 4 days. Upon return, the Avis rep went straight to the front bumper. Then said he had to talk to his boss. They made me wait. I lived in Italy for 5 years. I know the game. They were trying to shake me down. I had to catch a train so I forced the issue. They essentially wanted me to bribe them. I know the game.. The VERY MINOR scratch on the front bumper did not come from my rental. I did not make a note of it because in my experience, blemishes like this are never an issue.
I hate that Avis are simply accepted the corrupt Avis location's position.
I do not feel like my version of the situation was ever given consideration.
I am sure that makes their job quite easy... and all over a couple of hundred Euros. Sad
I will never rent from Avis again. I will voice my displeasure to anyone who will listen via social media reviews.
If I am the norm when handling grievances, I am sure your market share will decline.
I have left positive feedback for good service in the past for Avis. I now regret that.
Good riddance.

β β β β β Front counter staff was not friendly or helpful and staff had a negative attitude as noticed by several customers. They did not have the car advertised, it felt like a bait and switch tactic. They tacked on a pretty hefty fee for a second driver. They will not ask you if you would like to be charged in Euros so that by charging you in dollars they can make extra money on their non competitive exchange rate. Poor communication about the process to pick up and drop off the car. When you are given the key and go to the garage find the office, and the staff will find your car and bring it down. There was no walk through with the car so check it for damage before you leave. For me it was about the attitude I would have guessed I was in France not Italy.

β β β β β Be careful, we were charged for damage that occurred before we rented the car.
We rented a Clio for our trip but the tire had a nail in it and we had to change it for a Fiesta. The damage was marked on both the electronic receipt (there were several scratches and marks noted on both the front and back bumper). The employee even marked it on the slip completed during initial inspection. This wasn't enough to prove that the damage was done before rented the car and they charge us 180 euros for damage we did not do to the car. Be careful, don't trust them. They are nice but please take a video and pictures of the car before you rent and make them sign the slip as you walk through to inspect damages when picking the car up. Be overly detailed in the damage, location of the damage, size of the damage, etc. They'll tell you that they know that there is damage and that it's not an issue then they'll charge you (and probably others) for the damage that was pointed out.
Escalated to customer service who upheld the charge. Even with the documentation, they stated they discovered "new" damage. Please avoid this location.
Only plus side (although this is probably part of the problem), this location has parking and you can leave the car there overnight. Just be on notice that you may be hit with charges for damage you didn't cause.

β β β β β Check in was super easy and the staff was very friendly. Based on prior reviews, I opted for full insurance to avoid any headaches.
Dropped the car off with zero issues. Overall great experience. However, the story doesnβt end there.
As others indicated, the location is in a ZTL (restricted traffic zone) - which means that unless you take a very roundabout way to get to their garage, (and if you make one wrong turn) you WILL drive through the ZTL zone and get fined by the police. 6 months later Avis charged me $49 to give my name to the police then 3 months after that I got a ticket (that escalates in price with time) from the Florence police for 180 Euro.
Itβs not worth the time or hassle to save on a discounted rental car from here.
