Costruito alla fine del XIII secolo sopra parte delle rovine del Foro Romano, di cui la vicina piazza delle Erbe ne rappresenta il fulcro, è formato da un articolato complesso di edifici che si sviluppano su tre lati attorno ad un'ampia corte interna rettangolare, e lascia aperto il fronte rivolto verso corso santa Anastasia. Era la residenza degli Scaligeri, la dinastia che per oltre un secolo governò su Verona (dal 1262 al 1387), e divenne una reggia vera e propria durante gli anni in cui Cangrande I della Scala arrivò ad assoggettare anche Vicenza, Treviso, Feltre, Padova, Mantova e Brescia. Il palazzo presenta una facciata su piazza dei Signori ed un'altra rivolta verso le Arche Scaligere, entrambe in cotto, separate da un ampio volto sovrastato da un'elegante balconata. Oggi è sede della Prefettura di Verona e purtroppo non è visitabile. Solo la piccola loggia situata sull'angolo destro viene utilizzata da qualche tempo per un piccolo mercato artigianale. On the short side of Piazza dei Signori, the one farthest from Piazza delle Erbe, stands the majestic medieval Cangrande Palace, also known as Palazzo degli Scaligeri, of the Podestà or of the Prefecture. Built at the end of the 13th century over part of the ruins of the Roman Forum, of which the nearby Piazza delle Erbe represents its fulcrum, it is formed by an articulated complex of buildings that develop on three sides around a large rectangular inner courtyard, and leave the front facing the course of Saint Anastasia open. It was the residence of the Scaligeri, the dynasty that ruled over Verona for more than a century (from 1262 to 1387), and became a royal palace during the years in which Cangrande I della Scala came to subdue Vicenza, Treviso, Feltre, Padua , Mantua and Brescia. The palace has a façade on Piazza dei Signori and another one facing the Scaliger Tombs, both in terracotta, separated by a large face surmounted by an elegant balcony. Today it is home to the Verona Prefecture and unfortunately cannot be visited. Only the small loggia located on the right corner has been used for some time for a small artisan market.
