A dignified lion reminding us that the city was subordinate to the Republic of Venice for four centuries.

Magnificent example of architectural style in perfect harmony with the square. The lion of San Marco, symbol of the Republic of Venice and its inhabitants of a time that was glorious of a past that has made history and of which the Venetian are proud. What to say if you do not look and admire.

Was good···! I was shooting unconsciously (*'▽') It was hot and vague, but when I returned to Japan thinking "I wanted to see a winged lion, I wanted to shoot", I shot it completely! (; ∀;) I'm glad I didn't miss such a cool thing! I can think of it.

Marble column with the Lion of San Marco (Leone Marciano), with the gospel opened with the inscription «Pax» and the low tail, made in 1523, to commemorate the return of the domination of the Serenissima. For very ancient custom - perhaps of Roman origin - on the market places, columns and capitals used to be raised, so too was Venice, in the squares of the cities and towns to which she was subjected the proud sign of the Lion of St. Mark wanted. And this column was wanted by the city in 1523: on the capital are the coats of arms of the doge Gritti, of the podestà Marcello, of the captain Tron and of the city of Verona. In 1797 the lion was shot down by the Veronese Jacobins, in the revolutionary euphoria of new times; the current was put back on April 25, the feast of San Marco, in 1886. This is Piazza Erbe too.

Colonna di San Marco (Leone Marciano) is a dignified lion reminting that the city was subordinate to the Venetian Republic for four centuries. Around Erbe square where the lion is located there are many restaurants and on Sundays a fair with sourvenirs and typical staff from Verona.
