Era denominata "Umberto I" ed aveva un campo di tiro di 270°, da punta Mariella (Palmaria) a Portovenere. la gittata pratica dei pezzi era di 5.000 mt., mentre quella teorica era di 9.500 mt. Il complesso dei meccanismi per il caricamento e la rotazione, che erano azionati idraulicamente, venne fornito dalla britannica Armstrong. La cupola corazzata, costruita dalla Gruson-Werk al prezzo di 2.382.500 lire, era composta da 15 elementi perimetrali più due di copertura (peso circa 1.400 t.) e da un'avancorazza a protezione della base (circa 960 t.). L'opera, che occupava una superficie di circa 3.000 mq, fu completata nel 1889: a parte il personale di guardia e per la manutenzione dell’impianto, non vi era una guarnigione stabile e veniva presidiata soltanto in guerra. Dedicata a Umberto I (il sovrano assassinato a Monza il 29.7.1900) non ebbe lunga vita operativa: l'acciaio dei suoi pezzi fu recuperato ed in sito rimase solo la cupola di ghisa su cui venne in seguito installata la direzione di tiro di una batteria a.a. da 76 mm. Il tentativo di riutilizzarla come carcere militare ebbe breve durata. Unica cosa, almeno per l'inverno, non è sempre aperto quindi se volete visitarlo, occorre prenotare la visita qualche tempo prima con un addetto del servizio. Il comune di Porto Venere dovrebbe cercare di incrementare il turismo "intelligente" attirandolo con le bellezze storiche site sull'isola Palmaria da poco sotto la sua gestione... Molto interessante la storia dei cannoni e del loro meccanismo di funzionamento. Consigliata la visita guidata. Magnificent fort on the island of Palmaria, construction maintained beautifully. G	Gianni Evange on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La fortezza del mare. Costruito fra il 1887 e il 1889 rappresenta senza dubbio uno dei sistemi fortificati costieri più vasti d'Italia. Il tutto è stato reso possibile anche grazie al lavoro di numerosi carcerati che tutti i giorni venivano portati dal carcere al forte percorrendo il sentiero (segnalato) chiamato il sentiero dei condannati. L'ingresso è gratuito. Vi consiglio di lasciare una piccola offerta per il personale ( molto disponibile) che vi può fare da guida all'interno del forte. Il giro (soli o accompagnati) è molto veloce. Viene data dal comune di Portovenere in affitto anche per matrimoni o eventi ...ha anche una terrazza panoramica dove si vede tutto il golfo di la spezia, peccato che non ci sia modo di arrivare all'isola da la Spezia nei mesi non estivi.. La Fortezza non è aperta al pubblico ..si può vedere solo nelle aperture organizzate dal comune. In questo periodo l'apertura è stata in occasione della giornata del FAI.
