Così morì, ucciso nella notte fra l'11 e il 12 agosto 1913 Gioacchino Silani, maggiore della Regia guardia di finanza. Nella notte tra l’11 e il 12 agosto del 1913, nelle acque del Lago Maggiore, nei pressi di Laveno Mombello in prossimità della foce del torrente Boesio": l’ufficiale, che stava da tempo conducendo "serrate indagini per stroncare un complesso traffico di merci di contrabbando", fu assassinato dai malviventi.
La notizia ufficiale venne pubblicata sulla copertina de La Domenica del Corriere (Anno XV n. 34 del 24-31 agosto 1913), a firma del famoso pittore Achille Beltrame, in cui si raffigurano i contrabbandieri intenti a colpire a morte il valoroso ufficiale.
Nel 1913 in uno scontro tra i fratelli Noia di Ghigga e il maggiore della guardia di Finanza Silani , questi muore per annegamento tra Acqua Negra e Gaggetto ( Gagett). Il 21 agosto il cadavere, dopo nove giorni, affiora dalle acque. Don Rossi parroco di Laveno: il Curato di Mombello ( Ernesto Redaelli di Barzanò) reclama a sé il funerale, rimase qualche ora oltre il fiume Boesio ( confine Mombello- Laveno). La Curia rispose a Rossi di dividere disturbi, fatiche e spese. Don Redaelli preferì abbandonare il cadavere al rivale. Il governo non retribuì al parroco neppure quanto era da lui anticipato per i solenni funerali.
