Según la tradición, sus orígenes se remontan al siglo VIII, cuando se levantó la primitiva iglesia sobre el edificio que había sido residencia del papa Gregorio II; sin embargo, la primera información histórica sobre la misma tiene lugar el año 1121, en una bula proclamada por el papa Calixto II. Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVII y los primeros años del siglo XVIII sufrió una profunda reconstrucción en diferentes etapas, que le confirieron la apariencia que presenta hoy día. Su fachada es barroca tardía mientras que su interior se estructura en una nave con tres capillas laterales. Destacan la talla en madera policromada de la Madonna del Carmine, así como tres obras de Biagio Puccini: La Madonna del Rosario, El Martirio de Santa Ágata, y La Crucifixión. La iglesia puede visitarse gratuitamente todos los días, de 09.00 a 12.00 y de 16.00 a 19.00 horas.
According to tradition, its origins go back to the 8th century, when the original church was built on the building that had been the residence of Pope Gregory II; However, the first historical information about it takes place in 1121, in a bull proclaimed by Pope Callistus II. During the second half of the seventeenth century and the first years of the eighteenth century underwent a profound reconstruction in different stages, which gave it the appearance it presents today. Its façade is late Baroque while its interior is structured in a nave with three side chapels. Highlights include the polychrome wood carving of the Madonna del Carmine, as well as three works by Biagio Puccini: The Madonna del Rosario, The Martyrdom of Saint Agatha, and The Crucifixion. The church can be visited free of charge every day, from 09:00 to 12:00 and from 04:00 to 19:00.

Saw a very pretty church ceremony and then hung out with the chaplains for a drink, lovely!

Apparently the church is open Monday to Friday 16:00 to 19:00, as well as for two weekend Masses at 17:00. You cannot visit the church during Mass, unless you want to attend of course. This is a pretty 18th century church, a centre of enthusiastic local devotion to the Madonna (Our Lady). Some of the locals here don't like tourists. The behaviour of some visitors gives them an excuse -please be respectful, and don't take photos with a flash.

The piazza outside is a typical roman square, but much more agreeable under the shade of a big tree which is rare
