The church of the Sacre Stimmate di San Francesco is a Catholic place of worship in the historic center of Rome located in the Pigna district, at the corner of Via dei Cestari with Largo di Torre Argentina. The current church is built on the site of a pre-existing one, entitled Santi Quaranta Martiri de calcarario, as recalled by a plaque preserved in the sacristy and dating back to 1298. In 1597 the church passed to the Archconfraternity of the Sacred Stimate of San Francesco, who had it rebuilt under the papacy of Clement XI in the eighteenth century and gave it the new name. It is currently managed by the community of the Missionaries of Mary. The project was entrusted to the architect Giovan Battista Contini who began the works in 1714.

Looking for unusual things. Already existing in 1200, after vicissitudes, it was rebuilt in 1700. In the Sacristy in a reliquary is kept the blood of St. Francis of Assisi. In the crypt of the church there is an ossuary which dates back to the sixteenth century. There are candelabra made with human bones, a font supported by a skull (which is said to belong to the one who built this suggestive underground) and a wall plastered with mosaic and formed by teeth. I refer you to the review on the Oratorio del Sacconi, on the Tiber Island Rome.

Beautiful. Beautiful old confessionals with Franciscan "hands" or whatever. :) Nice - though a bit like another cold empty church museum.

This 18th century church is consecrated to the Stigmata of St Francis, but a chapel was dedicated to the previous medieval church on the site (Holy Forty Martyrs) as they used to do when a church was demolished and replaced by a new one dedicated to another Saint. They kept the old parish burial rites, so its inside floor hosts burial slabs. The previous Santissimi Quaranta Martiri del Calcarario, took name from the furnaces where buildings’ ruins would be cooked and turned into white lime (a disaster to any art history fan). It seems the crypt ( but I have not visited it) guards bones of those buried in the church, arranged in patterns resembling the ossuary at Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini.
