★ ★ ★ ★ ★ L’11 settembre 1960 un aereo S2F-1 dell’87° Gruppo cadde nel lago di fronte a Laveno, provocando la morte del sottotenente Giovanni Tosches, di Laveno, e del sottotenente di vascello Riccardo Ugo. Ricorda un testimone: “Quel giorno io ero presente, proprio con mio padre (mamma e sorellina) e da tutta la vita il ricordo di quella disgrazia mi torna nella mente. La voce che girò per Laveno in quei momenti drammatici era che il pilota si fosse abbassato (forse) troppo per salutare così dei parenti che erano presso l'imbarcadero, ma durante una virata l'aereo scivolò d'ala (a sinistra) sfiorando i tetti e lo stallo, forse toccò i tralicci della vicina stazione ferroviaria, fino a cadere a pochi metri dalla parte anteriore del traghetto in partenza, evitando all'ultimo momento una sciagura ancora più grande, dato che il traghetto era pieno di passeggeri. Presi quel traghetto poco dopo e, nonostante avessi solo sette anni, ricordo con angoscia la vista delle macchie oleose sulla superficie di quel lago profondissimo e alcuni rottami galleggianti, poi recuperati.” In quel punto il lago è molto profondo: Dell'equipaggio non si trovò nulla, purtroppo.
 On 11 September 1960, an S2F-1 airplane of the 87th Group fell into the lake in front of Laveno, causing the death of Lieutenant Giovanni Tosches, of Laveno, and of the second lieutenant of vessel Riccardo Ugo. A witness recalls: “That day I was present, just with my father (mother and little sister) and from all my life the memory of that misfortune comes back to me. The rumor that went around Laveno in those dramatic moments was that the pilot had lowered (perhaps) too much to greet the relatives who were at the pier, but during a turn the plane slipped from the wing (left) touching the roofs and the stall, perhaps touched the pylons of the nearby railway station, until it fell a few meters from the front of the departing ferry, avoiding an even greater disaster at the last moment, given that the ferry was full of passengers. I took that ferry shortly after and, despite being only seven years old, I remember with anguish the sight of the oily spots on the surface of that deep lake and some floating wrecks, then recovered. " At that point the lake is very deep: Unfortunately nothing was found of the crew.
