★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Guided tours in areas like Matera involve much walking and standing; listening intently in increasingly hot conditions can be an exhausting process. When the morning's tour of the cave dwellings had finished we were faced with a climb back into the main town. As we progressed slowly, in a somewhat exhausted fashion up the hill, Via Bruno Bozzi, we came across Il Quarto Storto, an ideally situated respite for such as we. After being welcomed we had an ice cream, chosen from a selection, which was most refreshing after our morning's exertions. We were then able to tackle the remainder of the hill with renewed vigour and anticipation of the delights of Matera as yet unexplored,
