 The architectural complex of the House of the Knights of Rhodes is the result of a centuries-old stratification of monuments on the area that housed the Forum of Augustus in the imperial age. This area was affected by the demolition works that between 1924 and 1932 led to the opening of Via dei Fori Imperiali, resulting in the disappearance of the medieval structures of the monastery of San Basilio and of the sixteenth-century ones of the Dominican Convent of SS. Annunziata. In 1466, Pope Paul II entrusted the administration of the priory of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem to his nephew Cardinal Marco Barbo, a hospital order that at the beginning of the thirteenth century had occupied the church and monastery of the Basilian monks, built since the ninth century above the Temple of Mars Ultor. Card. Barbo promoted a series of restorations that gave the building the appearance that can still be partly admired today: the same workers who worked on the nearby Palazzo della Repubblica in Venice were probably used. Cross the hall of honor with the flags of the order and the arengario for speeches, the hall of the loggia with the recomposition of the attic of the porticoes of the Forum of Augustus, some rooms with ancient wooden ceilings, sculptures and paintings of various epochs, you enter the airy eight-arched loggia overlooking the Forums. The fresco paintings, unfortunately greatly deteriorated by exposure to atmospheric agents, depict medallions with emperors and landscapes populated by plants and animals of different species and are attributed to artists from the circle of Andrea Mantegna. Since 1946, the House has been granted use to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta: the chapel created in the atrium of a Roman residence is dedicated to the patron saint of the Knights, John the Baptist.
