It was the door that divided the Forum from the suburra and over the centuries has undergone various transformations.

Without any ornament, but nevertheless magnificent in its rough architecture, the arch was the main communication route between the Imperial Forums and the "Subura": its name alludes to the frequent "quagmires" to which the area was subject to leave. from the Middle Ages.Today the Arco dei Pantani is only a place to linger to enjoy a breathtaking spectacle on the opposite Forums of Augustus and Nerva.

[Arco dei Pantani] is located on the Tor de Conti. It is the remains of the Augustus square, without any decoration, but from here you can see the impressive and magnificent views of the Imperial Forum and the Roman Forum. The arch is the passage between the square and the suburbs. The name "Pantani" implied the floods that occurred in the lower reaches of the area in the Middle Ages. It was one of the lowest areas in Rome, located at an altitude of 13-14 meters, so it was more prone to flooding.

On via Tor de 'Conti, you meet this Arco, simple, without frills (formed with large rectangular blocks), but which at the time in which it was created had a great importance, that of putting the Forums in communication with the Suburra (which was an infamous area of Rome, the current Monti district). Its name indicates that at that time with frequent flooding, this area became a "quagmire"; these calamities caused various diseases including malaria. Seeing some photos from the 20s of the last century, before the "guttings" were made to recover the area of the Forum, you can see that via Bonella was still present, which crossed the Forums and arrived in via Tor de 'Conti, as in the 'antiquities Today it is a very beautiful and evocative place, because it is used by tourists as a "window" to admire the Imperial Forums.

Interesting ruins, it’s just a shame there are barriers up all around it and limited signage. That said, it’s only a couple of minutes walk from the Colosseum so it’s worth checking out if your in the area.
