[Arco dei Pantani] is located on the Tor de Conti. It is the remains of the Augustus square, without any decoration, but from here you can see the impressive and magnificent views of the Imperial Forum and the Roman Forum. The arch is the passage between the square and the suburbs. The name "Pantani" implied the floods that occurred in the lower reaches of the area in the Middle Ages. It was one of the lowest areas in Rome, located at an altitude of 13-14 meters, so it was more prone to flooding.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Su via Tor de’ Conti, si incontra questo Arco, semplice, senza fronzoli (formato con grossi blocchi rettangolari), ma che al tempo in cui fu creato aveva una grande importanza, quella di mettere in comunicazione i Fori con la Suburra (che era una zona malfamata di Roma, l’attuale rione Monti).
Il suo nome indica che in quel tempo con i frequenti allagamenti, questa zona diventava un “pantano”; queste calamità causavano diverse malattie fra le quali la malaria.
Vedendo alcune foto degli anni 20 del secolo scorso, prima che venissero eseguiti gli “sventramenti” per recuperare l’area del Foro, si può vedere che ancora era presente via Bonella che attraversava i Fori e arrivava in via Tor de’ Conti, come nell’antichità
Oggi è un luogo molto bello e suggestivo, perché è utilizzato dai turisti, come “finestra” per ammirare i Fori Imperiali.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Interesting ruins, it’s just a shame there are barriers up all around it and limited signage.
That said, it’s only a couple of minutes walk from the Colosseum so it’s worth checking out if your in the area.
