Fântâna de forma octagonala este decorată cu stemă orașului Roma, iar patru steme reprezintă familiile ce au contribuit la construrea fantanii. Esternamente avrebbe sicuramente bisogno di una belle pulizia e di una rinfrescata per riportare i colori dei materiali al loro antico splendore; oltre a questo, si riesce comunque a vedere la qualità delle sculture e il valore architettonico dell'opera nel suo complesso. L'opera venne inizialmente posizionata proprio davanti all'entrata della chiesa di Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli da dove venne spostata nel 1675 in occasione dei lavori di ampliamento della chiesa stessa ma anche perché, si racconta, il vociare delle gente che sostava intorno alla fontana disturbava le funzioni religiose. Originariamente era invece posta al centro della piazza, ma per i lavori di ampliamento della vicina chiesa, trovandosi troppo vicina, fu spostata, anche perché le persone che vi sostavano, con il loro vociare disturbavano le funzioni religiose. La fontana è composta da una vasca ottagonale con lati alternati lineari e concavi di lunghezza minore. Su essa si appoggia una vasca anch'essa di forma ottagonale, con tutti i lati lineari, ai lati oltre agli stemmi del comune di Roma, sono posti quelli delle quattro famiglie che contribuirono per le spese della costruzione, con l’unica limitazione che fosse edificata vicino alle loro case. Al centro è posto un balaustro ornato che sorregge un piccolo catino di marmo bianco, dal quale zampilla l’acqua che si riversa in quella sottostante. Le forme aggraziate e le proporzioni tra i vari elementi, ne fanno, a mio giudizio, una tra le più belle fontane di Roma. Alimentata dall'acquedotto Felice, si compone di un basamento in travertino su cui poggia un catino della stessa forma, con ai lati le insegne del Senato e del Popolo Romano e gli stemmi delle famiglie tra le più facoltose della zona, impegnatesi a sostenere il costo della realizzazione. Quei quattro Signori, i cui appartamenti si affacciavano sulla piazza, hanno pensato bene di commissionare il lavoro al migliore dei professionisti. Un’idea niente male.
