Der Monte dei Pegni, eine soziale und kreditgewährende Institution, wurde 1527 vom Minderheitsaktionär Giovanni da Calvi zusammen mit einer Finanzgruppe von römischen Adligen gegründet, um die Wucherer zu bekämpfen. Zuerst hatte die Verbindung keinen ständigen Sitz, erst Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts wurde der Monte di Pietà Palast als Sitz erkoren. Das ursprüngliche Gebäude wurde 1588 von Ottaviano Mascherino für Kardinal Prospero Santacroce gebaut. Nach dem Tod des Kardinals fiel der Palast 1591 an die Petrignani von Amelia und dann 1603 an den Monte di Pietà. Das Gebäude wurde umgehend von den Architekten Carlo Maderno und Francesco Borromini erweitert, um es auf seine neue Funktion auszurichten. Auf dem Ventil einer massiven Muschel steht der Borghesische Adler, seine Krallen auf zwei kleinen Basen ruhend. Eine Maske bildet den Mittelpunkt, aus deren Mund sich Wasser ins Becken mit abgerundeter Kante ergiesst. An den Seiten der Maske treten zwei Drachen aus dem mittleren Fries hervor und giessen ebenso Wasser in die Wanne. Dem Betrachter, dem die Heraldik der Familie Borghese vertraut ist, erblickt in der symbolischen Gestaltung des Adlers und der Drachen, zweifellos das Wappen der Borghese. Der Brunnen wie auch der Gebäudekomplex an sich, sind interessante Objekte. Der Monte di Pietà Palast spiegelt die kluge und gewagte Kredit- und Sozialpolitik des 16. Jahrhunderts wider.
The Monte dei Pegni, a social and credit-granting institution, was founded in 1527 by the minority shareholder Giovanni da Calvi together with a financial group of Roman nobles to fight the usurers. At first the association had no permanent seat, it was not until the middle of the 17th century that the Monte di Pietà palace was chosen as the seat. Fontana non molto grande, ma sicuramente molto ben strutturata e impeccabile dal punto di vista della concezione architettonica. Risalente al Diciassettesimo Secolo, questa opera dell'autore Carlo Maderno su commissione papale, è arrivata a noi ancora splendida, anche se gli farebbe sicuramente bene una bella ripulita.
Fountain not very large, but certainly very well structured and impeccable from the point of view of the architectural concept. Dating back to the seventeenth century, this work by the author Carlo Maderno on papal commission, has come to us still splendid, although it would certainly do him a good cleaning.

In Piazza del Monte, nel rione VII (REGOLA), addossata al Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, è presente una bella fontana, del XVII secolo commissionata dal Papa Paolo V (Borghese) probabilmente a Carlo Maderno. La composizione, può essere divisa in due parti: -Quella inferiore composta da una semplice vasca semicircolare (con forme mistilinee che ricordano le tazze di quell’epoca). -Quella superiore insolitamente ricca di elementi ravvicinati fra di loro. Nella parte più alta si trova una valva di conchiglia,.al cui interno è presente una fiera aquila con le ali spiegate e la testa rivolta verso sinistra. Al di sotto centralmente è posto un mascherone dalla cui cannella posta nella bocca fuoriesce l’acqua verso la vasca, ai lati sono presenti due piccoli draghi anch’essi riversano l’acqua verso la vasca sottostante. L’Aquila, unitamente ai draghi, sono i simboli della nobile famiglia dei Borghese. NOTA FONTANE A ROMA Le fontane a Roma, sono uno degli elementi caratteristici della città eterna, c’è chi dice che è la città con più fontane del mondo. Sono state un elemento importante sin dall’antica Roma, oggi oltre le tipiche fontanelle in ghisa dette “nasoni” (circa 2000), ve ne sono di molto belle ubicate nei posti più differenti, quali ville, piazze, strade, cortili ed altro. Alcune sono state realizzate dai più grandi geni artistici di tutti i tempi, un nome su tuti Gian Lorenzo Bernini. L’importanza che hanno nell’arredo urbano è anche testimoniata dagli sguardi di ammirazione dei turisti e dal fatto che hanno anche l’utilità sociale di dissetare dopo magari una lunga passeggiata sotto il sole.
