Maria in Domnica, detta anche “in navicula”. L'autore è Andrea Sansovino, che la realizzò nel 1931 in marmo bianco, travertino. La prima menzione di una “navicella”, da cui il nome della piazza e l’attributo alla chiesa, è del 1484 (Pomponio Leto), ma si riferisce ad una precedente scultura, forse d’età romana. La scultura attuale fu realizzata nel 1518-1519 su committenza del cardinale Giovanni de’ Medici, presumibilmente ad opera di Andrea Sansovino (1460-1529) che nel 1513-1514 aveva effettuato per lo stesso cardinale il restauro della vicina chiesa. Riadattata a fontana nel 1931, in occasione dei lavori per l'allargamento della via, è stato mutato anche il suo orientamento (in origine la scultura era collocata perpendicolarmente al porticato della chiesa) ed è stato realizzato alla base un basso bacino ellittico. La nave, in marmo bianco, è posta sopra un basamento in marmo che riproduce sulle facce minori lo stemma dei Medici. Sul rostro della prua è scolpita una protome animale. Il fondo del sottostante bacino è realizzato con un mosaico in ciottoli di fiume decorato da figure di pesci e imbarcazioni. La fontana è stata sottoposta a restauro tra il 2003 e il 2004. Nel settembre del 2005 un grave atto vandalico ha provocato il distacco e l’asportazione della protome animale e scheggiature sulla superficie adiacente e sulla prora. E’ seguito un intervento per il riassemblaggio dei pezzi recuperati. The fountain takes its name from the miniature depiction of an ancient Roman galley and is located in the center of the square in front of the church of S. Maria in Domnica, also known as "in navicula". The author is Andrea Sansovino, who built it in 1931 in white marble, travertine. The ship, in white marble, is placed on a marble base that reproduces the Medici coat of arms on the smaller faces. An animal protome is carved on the rostrum of the prow. The bottom of the basin below is made with a river pebble mosaic decorated with figures of fish and boats. The fountain was restored between 2003 and 2004. In September 2005, a serious act of vandalism caused the detachment and removal of the animal head and chips on the adjacent surface and on the prow. This was followed by an intervention for the reassembly of the recovered pieces.

Si trova su un basamento con insegne di Leone X (1513). E' stata adattata a fontana quando nel 1931 è stata risistemata la zona in cui si trova. Si trova posizionata su una piccola area verde di forma mistilinea e mediante delle colonnine collegate fra foro da catene di ferro, viene delimitata l’area di rispetto, molto utile per non farla danneggiare e permetterne in modo ottimale la visione. NOTA FONTANE A ROMA Le fontane a Roma, sono uno degli elementi caratteristici della città eterna, c’è chi dice che è la città con più fontane del mondo. Sono state un elemento importante sin dall’antica Roma, oggi oltre le tipiche fontanelle in ghisa dette “nasoni” (circa 2000), ve ne sono di molto belle ubicate nei posti più disparati, quali ville, piazze, strade, cortili ed altro. Alcune sono state realizzate dai più grandi geni artistici di tutti i tempi, un nome su tutti Gian Lorenzo Bernini. L’importanza che hanno nell’arredo urbano è anche testimoniata dagli sguardi di ammirazione dei turisti e dal fatto che hanno anche l’utilità sociale di dissetare dopo magari una lunga passeggiata sotto il sole. Si tratta di una fontana che ha la forma di una nave, probabilmente perché essa fu realizzata da uno stanziamento di marinai che, duemila anni fa, sorgeva proprio qui. Opera del Sansovino si basa sulla scultura della galera romana che però risale a due millenni fa ed è l'elemento caratterizzante del monumento. Ricorda un po' la zuppiera di fronte alla chiesa Nuova.... cercatela. One of the most beautiful and curious fountains that the Romans love very much even if it is a little mistreated.
