β β β β β visited the place. Standing on the bridge of sighs and looking at Doge Palace and the Prison, makes one what was the type of justice that was meted out to the prisoners.

β β β β β Part of the Doges Palace tour. While the cells are all pretty similar and may seem boring to some, there's a rich sense of history about it that reminds one about how dissenters were imprisoned in the past.

β β β β β You can enter the ancient prison when walking through the doges Palace. It's not that much to see, all the cells are alike, still you get a chill from the medival atmosphere, and it's interesting from an architectonical point of view.

β β β β β Awful performance on 16 Feb 2020 by Collegium Ducale: Vivaldi and Baroque in Venice. We wanted to listen to Vivaldi in Venice and the performance by the group was just unpleasant. The musicians seemed either drunk or unprofessional. I have never heard such bad playing.

β β β β β There is not much exebited here. But for me just walking through the maze of prison is impressive. The heavy wooden doors that could close not only the cells but also coridors are scary. So is the bridge of sights. But a little more information wpuld be good.

β β β β β The Palazzo delle Prigioni (ancient Venetian "Prison Palace"), united with the Ducal Palace by the famous Bridge of Sighs, which crosses the Rio di Palazzo, is the work of architect Antonio da Ponte (the same who designed the Rialto Bridge), who began projects in 1589. years. The builder who started construction in 1563 was Giovanni Antonio Rusconi. The building was completed by Antonio and Tommaso Contino around 1614, it was made to partially replace the Palazzo Ducale prisons. While the prisoners were housed in "chambers" located along Rio or facing the inner courtyards, in three rooms overlooking the Riva degli Schiavoni and San Marco Basin housed one of the oldest magistrates of the Republic of Venice (attested from the middle of the 13th century ), the Lords of Night at the Criminal. They, six of whom represented city districts, had not only supervisory and police duties, with great skills, but also judicial functions, which included trial instructions and the conduct of interrogators of defendants and witnesses. In the eighteenth century, the said premises were used as a prison dispensary and shelter for all those suspects and suspects who spontaneously presented themselves to justice. Here, during Austrian domination, Italian patriots and politicians Niccolo Tommaseo and Daniele Manin were also detained and then released from the cell on March 17, 1848, after a popular anti-Austrian uprising, to form an interim city government and create the Independent Republic of Venice. An interesting part of the history of this Palace is that only two prisoners ever escaped, Casanova and his monkish accomplice.
