Church of the Holy Cross

The church of Santa Croce is a sacred building located in Vinci (FI). Of thirteenth-century origin, restored several times over the centuries, it no longer retains the original structure. The neo-Renaissance style works carried out in the years 1925-1935 gave it its current appearance. The interior has three naves divided into spans in whose ends there are two chapels dedicated to Sant'Andrea and the Blessed Sacrament. On the right wall is the Baptistery chapel, rearranged in 1952 with the restoration of the ancient baptismal font. On the left, the Chapel of the Crucifix with an ancient wooden crucifix, the relics of the Holy Cross and an image of the Addolorata object of great popular devotion. The crucifix dates back to the first half of the fifteenth century, while the lying dead Christ is dated 1614. Among the paintings we note a sixteenth-century Nativity of the Virgin by Francesco Brina (1562), the Virgin of the Rosary in the manner of Matteo Rosselli (from the Badia Fiorentina), the Magdalene and the most holy name of Mariadi Florentine school of the seventeenth-eighteenth century, the Miracle of San Biagio attributed to Gaetano Piattoli (about 1756, Alessandri altar) and an Adoration of the Magi by Pier Dandini (also from the Badia Fiorentina). The baptistery Housed in the oratory of the Compagnia del Corpus Domini, it was inaugurated on April 15, 1952 during the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Leonardo da Vinci. At the center of the octagonal room, designed by Ugo Giulio Arata, is the ancient baptismal font, in which it is believed that on April 16, 1452 the parish priest Piero di Bartolomeo Cecci baptized Leonardo da Vinci. On the right wall we find a plaque in which both the place and the date of Leonardo's birth are remembered, taken from a document of his grandfather Ser Antonio da Vinci. The environment has also recently been enriched by the sculptural works in metal alloy created by the artist Cecco Bonanotte inspired by the history of salvation.

Small but very small church where it is possible to meditate and pray in peace. It is located in the center near the museum. Here Leonardo was baptized. It houses a plaque in an archaic Italian that remembers that moment and the witnesses of the event. Outside you can admire a breathtaking landscape.
