All’inizio del secolo XIII, l’edificio fu ampliato e trasformato in stile gotico.
It is not known when the imposing church of San Pietro was built, but it is certain that, in the early Middle Ages, it was the main religious building in Gubbio, after the Cathedral. According to some documents preserved in the Cathedral Archives, the adjacent abbey founded by the Cassinesi Benedictines already existed in the 11th century. It is therefore assumed that the church dates back to at least 1000. At the beginning of the thirteenth century, the building was enlarged and transformed into a Gothic style. The Benedictines of Cassinesi in 1519 were replaced by the Olivetan Benedictines, who transformed the church and abbey in the Renaissance style.
The façade has traces of three different eras: the columns of the portico that once adorned the façade (8th - 9th century) belong to the first period, but which are now incorporated into the wall; the upper part of the facade is from 1200, while the two rectangular windows are from the end of 1500.
