P	P G on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Il Santuario sorge a circa 2 chilometri dal centro abitato, in una valle raggiungibile attraverso la vecchia strada che conduce da Rocchetta a Scapoli, incastonato nella roccia in posizione piuttosto isolata. Lungo il tracciato, anticamente frequentato da viandanti e da pellegrini diretti all’Abbazia di Montecassino e a quella di San Vincenzo a Volturno, sorge questo Santuario fatto edificare dagli abati di San Vincenzo, presso il quale sostavano per riprendersi dal tragitto, accolti dall’immagine di San Cristoforo, dipinta sulla facciata, protettore dei viandanti. Qui c’è da fare una precisazione: nell’immagine di copertina non vedete alcuna immagine sacra, poiché con gli anni la chiesa è stata ingrandita ed il muro con l’immagine del Santo è adesso muro centrale della chiesa. L’intitolazione dell’edificio alla Vergine risale al XIII secolo, quando vi fu collocata un’effige della Madonna con il Bambino, mentre il toponimo “delle Grotte” deriva dall’origine di Chiesa rupestre. The Sanctuary is located about 2 kilometers from the town, in a valley that can be reached via the old road that leads from Rocchetta to Scapoli, set in the rock in a rather isolated position. Along the route, formerly frequented by wayfarers and pilgrims heading to the Abbey of Montecassino and that of San Vincenzo a Volturno, stands this Sanctuary built by the abbots of San Vincenzo, where they stopped to recover from the journey, welcomed by the image of San Cristoforo, painted on the facade, protector of travelers. Here we need to make a clarification: in the cover image you do not see any sacred image, since over the years the church has been enlarged and the wall with the image of the saint is now the central wall of the church. The building was named after the Virgin in the 13th century, when an effigy of the Madonna and Child was placed there, while the toponym "delle Grotte" derives from the origin of the rock church.

Peccato che la Chiesa non è visitabile dal momento che all'interno è ricca di affreschi interessanti. Completely surrounded by greenery. Magnificent architecture. Well maintained.
