Originally the church was a suffragan of the pieve a Morba, located near the homonymous bathrooms. In the VI century, the saints Giusto and Clemente, coming from Populonia, arrived in Volterra passing through these lands. In places where at present the rare churches dedicated to them, in the past there were early Christian sites, even in apostolic times, as well as important "hospitals", which would stop the "pilgrims", namely direct pilgrims to Rome. According to the hypothesis of Don Mario Bocci, it would have confirmed the ancient popular item, according to which St. Peter would be physically passed through these lands more than once: in the places it passes the faithful were building churches dedicated to him; whereas, on the other hand, churches stood longer, bearing the name of the Most Holy Savior, that is, of Jesus Christ himself, who was widely preached by Peter. The period of construction of the main church is uncertain, but it probably occurred between the end of the eleventh and early twelfth century, in a town called core and clubby "Castronovo".

This church is so beautiful. My grandparents were baptised here in 1895 and 1900. I hope to visit one day in the future.
