One of many churches to see in Rome. Definitely work of art that should be on your to do list, when visiting Rome.

Calling it a hidden gem is a bit of an overstatement, but when you know that it contains one of Michaelangelo's most incredible works and you consider the queues for anything else he has done, then yes, it is a hidden gem. Come and admire Michaelangelo's Moses for free!

The temple was built in 432–440 to house the relic of the chains that bound Saint Peter when he was imprisoned in Jerusalem. According to legend, when Leo compared them to the chains of St. Peter's final imprisonment in the Mamertine Prison, in Rome, the two chains miraculously fused together. The chains are now kept in a reliquary under the main altar in the basilica. The main attraction of the church is Michelangelo's Moses. It was completed in 1515, originally intended as part of a massive 47-statue, free-standing funeral monument for Pope Julius II.The statue of Moses is about 3.74 meters high and sits in the center of the bottom tier of the monument. Michelangelo's statues of Rachel and Leah are on the left and the right of his Moses. Pope Julius II. is buried in St Peter's Basilica.

Incredibly underrated location to visit. If you’re staying anywhere near Roma Termini then it’s a must-visit. The main attraction is Michelangelo’s Moses. Hard to believe it was only myself and another visitor admiring this work. Don’t forget to see the chains of Peter and the rest of the church. Some reviews here seem to be confused, this is NOT the Basilica di San Pietro in Vatican City, this is the one in Vincoli.

Most people come to Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli to take a look at Michelangelo's Moses, one of his better known works. It's a magnificent Renaissance sculpture. Most get transfixed by Moses that they tend to ignore the rest of the church. That would be a loss for any visitor. Walk around and inspect the various pieces of art, including a couple that are quite unusual because they include skeletons. One is of the grim reaper. Don't forget to check out the chains in the crypt. They are reputed to be the chains that held St Peter in captivity.

If you are in Rome, you must visit. The grand scale of the building, domes with great paintings, sculptures, biggest columns, all are breathtaking! Every corner and space is literally awesome and undescribable! I wish I could find the right adjective... Free entry no need to purchase any ticket unless you want to see the museum and Sistine chapel which requires about 24 euro

If you are interested in Michelangelo's work, the Basilica of Saint Peter in Chains gives a rare opportunity to get close to a sculpture of Michelangelo. The tomb od Pope Julius II is separated only by a low fencing, one can almost touch the sculpture of Moses finished by the artist in 1515. You can see amazingly detailed face, musculature, and even vains in arms and hands sculptured in marble. Moses seems to be alive.

A unusually quiet space given the fact that it houses a Michelangelo masterpiece, Moses and the chains which bound St. Peter. Its free to visit photographs welcome, and experience not to be missed. Legend has it that the master himself was so struck by the life-like appearance of Moses that he shouted "speak to me". When he heard no reply he flung his mallet at the knee leaving a mark. I honestly couldn't find the mark, but it's a great story all the same.
