★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Di epoca romana imperiale, è probabilmente quanto rimane di un faro o di una torre di avvistamento risalente al II secolo. La parte superiore della torre fu costruita invece intorno al XII secolo, basandosi sull'identificazione dell'edificio con la "torre bellissima ma solitaria" descritta da Riccardo Cuor di Leone. I proprietari dell'edificio erano i Bobazani, da cui probabilmente l'edificio prese il nome; inoltre un membro della famiglia, Cencius, possedeva un castello nelle vicinanze del quale la torre sarebbe quanto oggi ne resta.
Fu parzialmente restaurata nel 1406 venendo utilizzata come dogana pontificia a partire dal 1562 in sostituzione del castello di Giulio II a causa di una piena del Tevere che ne modificò il percorso. La torre mantenne questa funzione fino al 1568, anno in cui la dogana fu trasferita a tor San Michele, ben più vicina alla linea di costa.
Col passare degli anni, terminata la propria funzione strategica, la torre fu abbandonata per lungo periodo diventando agli inizi del 1800 un deposito, per poi passare di proprietà alla famiglia Aldobrandini. Questi ultimi la affittarono al traghettatore Tancredi Chiaraluce, che allora svolgeva un servizio di collegamento tra le due rive del Tevere con la cosiddetta "Scafa", da cui il vicino ponte prese il nome più comune. Chiaraluce vi abitò per un periodo non meglio definito, allestendovi inoltre un punto di ristoro per viaggiatori e cacciatori.
From the Imperial Roman period, it is probably what remains of a lighthouse or a watchtower dating back to the 2nd century. The upper part of the tower was built around the 12th century, based on the identification of the building with the "beautiful but lonely tower" described by Richard the Lionheart. The owners of the building were the Bobazani, from whom the building probably took its name; moreover, a member of the family, Cencius, owned a castle in the vicinity of which the tower would be all that remains today.
It was partially restored in 1406 and was used as a papal customs starting from 1562 to replace the castle of Julius II due to a flood of the Tiber which changed its path. The tower maintained this function until 1568, the year in which customs was transferred to Tor San Michele, much closer to the coast line.
Over the years, once its strategic function was over, the tower was abandoned for a long time, becoming a warehouse in the early 1800s, and then it was owned by the Aldobrandini family. The latter rented it to the ferryman Tancredi Chiaraluce, who then carried out a service of connection between the two banks of the Tiber with the so-called "Scafa", from which the nearby bridge took its more common name. Chiaraluce lived there for an undefined period, also setting up a refreshment point for travelers and hunters.
