Very interesting well preserved site. Much more complete than the Roman Forum. You get a real feeling of walking through an ancient Roman city.

Ostia Antica is definitely worth the visit - it’s a huge site, and we did it with kids, so worth keeping in mind. It is also accessible by public transit from Rome which is awesome (we’re huge fans of public transit)! We went in the winter - and the only criticism we have was that the best mosaics were covered for the winter?. The site is much more informal the some of the more official touristy sites - like Pompeii (which we visited the following day). This meant that you had greater access to explore the ruins - which is wonderful assuming the public remains respectful. The kids enjoyed the freedoms of movement for sure. The more delicate spaces were still cordoned off to keep visitors at a safe distance. We didn’t get to see everything. Plan a whole day, and bring a picnic lunch and water ?.

I didn't even know Ostia Antica existed until it was listed as an excursion on one of our cruise destinations. I've visited Pompeii and Herculaneum on several occasions and been overwhelmed by their history and atmosphere. The ruins at Ostia are fantastic and without doubt on par especially the scale of the site. You can imagine the chariots going up & down the roads and the actions & sounds of daily family life. We visited in the afternoon and there was only us and a school party present. Unlike alot of European historica sites, the toilets were free and very clean. The ruins are not as well preserved as others mainly due to the areas not being cordoned off so you have free access to everything. This means many of the houses etc have been destroyed by visitors standing on them or taking pieces home as souvenirs. Also there is no ongoing restoration or further excavation occurring which would generate finances to do this. The deterioration is very apparent in many of the photos on display. It's wonderful that visitors can visit the site but it must be treated with respect for future generations to enjoy. The school party during on visit climbed on the house's walls, broke bits off and suchlike. Our guide advised that only 40% of the site has been discovered todate so it would be lovely to think that at some point other treasures will emerge. If you're in and around Rome forget going to the touristy sites and come here instead as it can be easily accessed by public transport, hire car or taxi. Read less

Best place to learn about the structure and organization of a Roman city. Build at the old entry point of the Tiber river this large city has everything. Temples, Forum, residential areas (up to 4 stories high!), shops, storage room and cult & other places of worship. Plan in 3h to have enough time to visit also the side roads which have nice villas and other gems hidden as well.

Well worth the effort, far better than Pompeii. You need to get there early to give yourself a full day as there is a lot to explore. Lots of fantastic well preserved mosaics, very little restriction.

If you are into history or archeology like we are then this is a must visit place. The site is truly amazing. What we were disappointed with is it appears this has become a money machine and more about getting as many tourists in as possible than preserving this awesome site. We saw photos from decades past and much that was once stunning has been lost to the millions of people, kids and adults alike, running amok all over the ruins. There is so much that is in the scrub and trees around this site that is left to be uncovered yet I saw no evidence of work being done to uncover or preserve. Pieces of history were being handled by the masses without any attempts to control them. More work on preservation balanced with the tourist machine should be done.

Poorly managed pearl of Rome. The place itself is amazing and you can literally immerse into this ancient city that used to host 50000 habitats in its best period. Unfortunately, the troubles start from the entrance. The security/ tickets control guy was hostile, there is no clear guide on β€œhow to plan your visit”, there are NO TOILETS on the entire complex (only one before the entrance) so I have found a few HUMAN WASTE while exploring, maps of the place are confusing and descriptions of places only show dry facts. The best collection of well preserved statues and paintings is closed. All of the above leaves a feeling of being grossed out.

It's amazing. When you walk through this place you can feel the old roman history. You can see all in one place like as temple for Gods, Basilica for Christians, Theatre, Bath, Multi storied old luxurious residence, beautiful open place, fresh air etc etc. Overall i loved it. I will go again to explore more. This site is huge. Single visit is not enough to see everything.
