C'è la possibilità anche di salire sulla torre dell'orologio, una dipendente comunale vi registra dandovi il tesserino di visitatore e vi accompagna sulla terrazza dalla quale si gode di un bel panorama. Tutto gratuito. Beautiful medieval village, it really seems to go back in time. Well maintained and cared for. There is also the possibility of climbing the clock tower, a municipal employee registers you by giving you a visitor card and takes you to the terrace from which you can enjoy a beautiful view. All free.

Siamo capitati in un momento in cui il museo era chiuso (gli orari e i giorni sono piuttosto ristretti, ma tanto non ci interessava comunque) e quindi non abbiamo potuto decidere se vedere gli interni. Merita una sosta giusto se ci passate sui piedi. The medieval village is pretty, as is the view from the castle. We happened at a time when the museum was closed (the hours and days are rather tight, but we didn't care much anyway) and therefore we couldn't decide whether to see the interior. It deserves a stop just if you walk on it.

Fu comune pisano dal X secolo e noto per lo spedale dipendente da quello di Pisa (1294), poi soppresso nel XVII secolo. Dal 1046 si hanno però i primi documenti del centro fortificato. Dopo la morte della contessa Matilde di Canossa il castello passò sotto la potestà della Chiesa vescovile pisana con la conseguente influenza politica di Pisa che ne riconobbe le istituzioni di comune rurale nel 1146. Il centro dove sorgeva un castello divenne sede della podesteria fiorentina (1406), nel 1433 fu smantellato dai Fiorentini, ma pochi anni dopo il fortilizio fu ricostruito, tanto che, nella seconda metà del XV secolo, respinse un attacco dei Genovesi, che erano sbarcati a Vada. Di questo nucleo fortificato non rimangono tracce particolarmente visibili se non alcune porzioni delle mura settentrionali ed occidentali in prossimità della chiesa dei SS. Giovanni Battista e Ilario e di alcuni torrioni bastionati post-medioevali. Divenne in seguito tenuta di caccia medicea con una vasta tenuta e fattoria e con una sede per gli arvivescovi pisani nel "Palazzo delle logge" (si racconta che qui si ammalò di malaria il giovane principino Garzia de Medici). Nel 1606 passò sotto Livorno e con la riforma amministrativa leopoldina del 1776 divenne podesteria di prima classe. Lo sviluppo consistente del territorio comunale si ebbe solo nell' Ottocento, quando furono avviate le bonifiche. In the medieval period in Rosignano the Della Gherardesca possessed possessions. Inglese di nascita, ha girato il mondo, ma amante del nostro mare, ha deciso di fermarsi qui. Ogni occasione è buona per banchettare in allegra compagnia, con buon vino e sacre risate... È un peccato non conoscerlo. Under the castle lives a dear friend, great host and gourmet. English by birth, he traveled the world, but a lover of our sea, he decided to stop here. Every occasion is good to feast in cheerful company, with good wine and sacred laughter ... It is a pity not to know him.
