★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Sito interessantissimo ma aperto solo su richiesta da inoltrare alla Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra. Nasce come zona cimiteriale imperiale (o aristocratica) e poi come cimitero cristiano. Si trova qui il sarcofago dell'imperatore Balbino e di sua moglie (238 d.C.).
Very interesting site but open only on request to be forwarded to the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archeology. It was born as an imperial (or aristocratic) cemetery area and then as a Christian cemetery. Here is the sarcophagus of the emperor Balbino and his wife (238 AD).

Il suo sentiero sotterraneo è affascinante e avvolgente. Le guide turistiche sono fantastiche, simpatiche e professionali. Il bagaglio culturale con il quale si esce è vastissimo! Consiglio vivamente una visita!
For the fourth day of the catacombs I had the honor and the pleasure of visiting this place made of art of magic of culture of history of archeology and painting. Its underground path is fascinating and enveloping. The tour guides are great, funny and professional. The cultural baggage with which you go out is vast! I highly recommend a visit!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Sito archeologico normalmente, ahimè, chiuso al pubblico ma che ho potuto visitare grazie alla "Festa del Parco dell'Appia Antica" , con guida annessa. Il sito è stato portato alla luce agli inizi del '900 per volere di Papa Benedetto XV (se non erro) e durante gli scavi trovarono anche i resti di un cimitero romano-pagano. Questo perchè il pavimento di quest'ultimo collassò nelle catacombe sottostanti. Perciò sono state rinvenute delle vere e proprie chicche come il sarcofago dell'Imperatore Balbino, unico sarcofago di un imperatore a giungere fino a noi, ed un bassorilievo con l'unica raffigurazione del faro di Ostia ad oggi conosciuta. Le catacombe, nate all'interno di un canale idraulico (detto poi spelonca magna), sono visitabili e, anche se non molto grandi, presentano interessanti reperti del periodo cristiano. Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, le catacombe furono anche utilizzate come ricovero, come testimoniano i graffiti sui muri. Che dire: speriamo in un'altra apertura straordinaria!
Archaeological site normally, alas, closed to the public but which I was able to visit thanks to the "Festa del Parco dell'Appia Antica", with an attached guide. The site was unearthed in the early 1900s at the behest of Pope Benedict XV (if I'm not mistaken) and during the excavations they also found the remains of a Roman-pagan cemetery. This is because the floor of the latter collapsed into the catacombs below. Therefore some real gems were found such as the sarcophagus of the Emperor Balbino, the only sarcophagus of an emperor to reach us, and a bas-relief with the only representation of the lighthouse of Ostia known to date. The catacombs, born inside a hydraulic canal (later called spelonca magna), can be visited and, although not very large, they present interesting finds from the Christian period. During the Second World War, the catacombs were also used as a shelter, as evidenced by the graffiti on the walls. What can I say: let's hope for another extraordinary opening!
