Quella chiesa quattrocentesca sostituì un precedente edificio del 1358 - già dedicato a santa Maria ed ubicato entro il castello - e fu probabilmente di tipo "francescano" cioè ad aula unica e con il tetto a vista sostenuto da travature in legno. Ma già nel tardo 1500 fu trasformata in tre navate e completata dal campanile. I lavori non terminarono qui perché nel secolo seguente furono realizzate le volte in muratura (come da desiderio del vescovo) e aperte le cappelle laterali. La fine del 1600 portò anche l'allungamento della chiesa verso la piazza con il conseguente rifacimento della facciata e del vestibolo davanti all'ingresso. Una storia, quindi, ricca di continui miglioramenti specchio di una comunità assai vivace e devota: peccato non aver potuto visitare l'interno. The church was built between 1443 and 1454 at the expense of the Counts Tornielli who undertook to build a cemetery in the square outside. That fifteenth-century church replaced a previous building of 1358 - already dedicated to Santa Maria and located within the castle - and was probably of the "Franciscan" type, that is, a single room with an exposed roof supported by wooden beams. But already in the late 1500s it was transformed into three naves and completed by the bell tower. The works did not end here because in the following century the masonry vaults were made (as desired by the bishop) and the side chapels were opened. The end of 1600 also brought the lengthening of the church towards the square with the subsequent reconstruction of the facade and the vestibule in front of the entrance. A history, therefore, full of continuous improvements, mirror of a very lively and devoted community: it was a pity that we could not visit the interior.

La costruzione fu iniziata nel 1443 per volontà di Giovanni Zanardo Tornielli, per offrire alla comunità del borgo un luogo di culto il più possibile vicino alla rocca difensiva, al riparo da scorrerie e incursioni varie (fra queste, vanno citate almeno quelle di Facino Cane del 1411/1412). Nel 1454 l'edificio originario poteva dirsi concluso. Ovviamente la chiesa odierna, dalla facciata pienamente barocca, è il frutto di ben cinque interventi costruttivi succedutisi nel corso dei secoli, gli ultimi dei quali furono effettuati nel tardo Seicento. È annoverabile fra i più notevoli esempi di architettura barocca della zona. It is not the first parish church of Barengo (the primacy belongs to the Oratory of San Clemente, from the 12th century), however Santa Maria Assunta has a lot of history behind it. Construction began in 1443 by the will of Giovanni Zanardo Tornielli, to offer the community of the village a place of worship as close as possible to the defensive fortress, sheltered from various raids and incursions (among these, at least those of Facino Cane del 1411/1412). In 1454 the original building could be considered completed. Obviously, today's church, with its fully Baroque façade, is the result of five successive building interventions over the centuries, the last of which were carried out in the late seventeenth century. It can be counted among the most notable examples of Baroque architecture in the area.
