Anticamente è appartenuto alla potente famiglia Gravina Gruyllas di Francofonte, venne abitato successivamente da altre famiglie nobili della città fino a quando il terremoto del 1693 non lo danneggio' irreparabilmente, se pur risparmio' parte della struttura originaria.
