L’area dell’attuale Piazza Virgiliana fino al XVIII secolo era invasa dalle acque paludose del Lago di Mezzo che lì formava un’insenatura ed era anche sede del porto detto ancona di Sant’Agnese (dal monastero omonimo andato distrutto) e venne prosciugata e bonificata nel 1797. In questo anno, sotto la dominazione napoleonica, Paolo Pozzo fu incaricato dal generale francese Sextius Alexandre François de Miollis della realizzazione della piazza-giardino in onore del poeta Virgilio. La struttura della piazza è a emiciclo rettangolare formato da: il lato corto, verso il Lago di Mezzo è il lato in cui si ammira il monumento a Virgilio, gli altri lati si estendono lungo vie con edifici di gusto neoclassico, tra i quali il Museo Diocesano di Arte Sacra “Francesco Gonzaga” (anticamente sede del convento di Sant’Agnese). I giardini della piazza sono ricchi di filari di alberi che ne delimitano il perimetro e di aiuole verdi, a prato. Vast and monumental green area, garden square, Piazza Virgiliana takes its name from the monument to Virgil which stands in front of the short side (closed by a parapet) of the square overlooking Lake Mezzo. The area of today's Piazza Virgiliana until the eighteenth century was invaded by the marshy waters of Lake Mezzo which formed an inlet there and was also home to the port called ancona di Sant'Agnese (from the monastery of the same name which was destroyed) and was drained and reclaimed in 1797. In this year, under Napoleonic domination, Paolo Pozzo was commissioned by the French general Sextius Alexandre François de Miollis to build the garden square in honor of the poet Virgil. Era costituito da un'alta colonna sulla cui sommità era posto un busto bronzeo del poeta, opera di Giovanni Bellavite. La sua collocazione era al centro della piazza Virgiliana secondo il progetto dell'architetto Pozzo. Tornata la città sotto dominazione austriaca, per ottenere spazio per le esercitazioni militari, la colonna fu traslocata al margine della piazza, verso il lago di Mezzo, nel luogo dove sorge il monumento attuale. Infine, nel 1821, la colonna virgiliana fu abbattuta per far spazio all'Anfiteatro Virgiliano progettato dall'architetto mantovano Giuseppe Cantoni e il busto di Virgilio fu collocato nel Palazzo Municipale. Nel 1919 l'anfiteatro ottocentesco che aveva soppiantato la colonna progettata da Paolo Pozzo, fu demolito e sullo spazio liberato fu costruito l'attuale monumento in marmo di Carrara disegnato dall'architetto Luca Beltrami sulla cui sommità è posta una grande statua in bronzo opera dello scultore milanese Emilio Quadrelli (1863-1925). Conclusisi i lavori il 16 ottobre 1926, il monumento a Virgilio fu ufficialmente inaugurato il 21 aprile 1927. After the work was completed on 16 October 1926, the monument to Virgil was officially inaugurated on 21 April 1927.

I giardini sono curati e si può passeggiare amabilmente. La piazza si trova poco distante dal Duomo e, a fianco, vi sono : un parcheggio comodo e un passaggio utile (dalle mura di cinta), per chi arriva dal Lago di Mezzo. Consigliato il passaggio in questo parchetto sia per il relax e la lettura che per l'allenamento. The beautiful statue of Virgil, a native of Mantua, stands out majestically, one cannot fail to notice it, even from a distance. The gardens are well cared for and you can stroll amiably. The square is located not far from the Duomo and, next to it, there are: a convenient parking and a useful passage (from the surrounding walls), for those arriving from Lago di Mezzo. We recommend the passage in this park for both relaxation and reading and for training.

La statua in onore del mantovano Virgilio si erge maestosa in mezzo ad una piazzola. Comodo anche per chi è in macchina, dato che accanto al parco si trova un parcheggio. Inoltre, è molto vicino al centro. Well-kept garden, perfect for relaxing or reading in the shade of the trees or on the benches. The statue in honor of the Mantuan Virgil stands majestically in the middle of a pitch. Also convenient for those with a car, as there is a parking lot next to the park. Furthermore, it is very close to the center.
