This place should be renamed to make it a bit clear - it’s three floors of variable art / history content. The castle/fortress element is negligible. The history floor is just prints and reproductions from nearby attractions like casa cavassa and Manta castle, but it’s well done, and probably very interesting if you read Italian - there’s no multi language signage or print outs anywhere. The art is mostly modern and nicely laid out. The prison basement is really serious, moving and dark - though with very low budget models that are a bit distracting.

The castle is really three museums: an old prison, a local history museum, and an art museum. Of these, the local history museum was disappointing: most of the objects are facsimiles of things found elsewhere nearby. Visitors are better of visiting other sites to see the real things. Also, signs are rarely in English, which makes learning about the history difficult. The art sections do include English explanations though. The prison is creepy, not inappropriately for what it is.

Impressive street of houses leading up the castiglia and lovely surrounding streets. Skipped the castiglia itself as it looks as if it is mainly the 19th century prison it became. It houses a prison museum.
