β β β β β Designed by Giotto, the bell tower to the right of Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral was begun by the artist in 1334 but continued by Andrea Pisano (who modified part of the design) following Giotto's death in 1337. Francesco Talenti finally completed it in 1359. Originally the tower was linked to the Duomo via a passageway situated at the level of the first cornice but this was demolished before 1437. Reliefs carved on the side where the passageway once existed are later works by Luca della Robbia; Andrea Pisano's original stone reliefs can be seen in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. The concepts of universal order and redemption are recurrent themes; hexagonal tiles on the tower's lower level (now replaced by copies) portray scenes from daily human life whilst diamond-shaped reliefs on the upper level illustrate more ethereal subjects in the form of the Planets, Virtue, Liberal Arts and the Sacraments. There's no lift, but climbing the 414 steps to the top of the 85m tower is well worth the effort!

β β β β β Even as someone in their 20s, the hike up was quite a trek - but well worth it! It was definitely worth the money, especially for the views of Florence and the Duomo. The stairways were quite tight and the steps relatively small, so keep that in mind and pace yourself. The top balcony is caged in but that doesn't ruin any of the spectacular views you'll get as a reward for making it to the top. Take in the history and really marvel at the work that would have gone in to making this amazing tower.

Climb it....worth every penny....
You need to buy your tickets on line if you go and do it last minute.

β β β β β The bell tower is one of the best ways to capture views of Florence from above. It is 400 and some steps to the top with a few landings to stop at on your way up. We had to buy tickets for a specific time from the official ticket shop nearby.

β β β β β You get great view of Florence from the top of Giotto's Bell Tower. It is well worth climbing the narrow 398 steps to the top. I took this photo from the entrance before I made my journey up with camera gear and a tripod

β β β β β It's a bit of a hike but it's easier to climb than the dome. Staircases are very narrow and it's two-way traffic. There's 3 floors where you can catch your breath. The view is amazing and you can visit the Campanile without adhering to time slots, and you can stay as long as you like.
