★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Livorno is a busy working port and there is little for the tourist here but it does have two forts. Fortezza Vecchia dates back to the mid 1500s and is close to the area known as Piccola Venezia, a small neighbourhood with canals. Sadly the fort was badly damaged in WW2, the townsfolk sheltered here during the war, but entering it via a tunnel through the very thick walls gives some idea of what it must once have been like. Hardly anything remains of the buildings but it has been turned into a park and gives the opportunity for a pleasant stroll and a view across the canal to other sites in the town

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Always a fascinating place, with a great view on the port and the surrounding area. The fortress was practically desert, but the access to the Mastio (Keep) was closed.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Interesting walls and fort that you should visit when waiting for the ferry. No loss! Just a little history. Nice view of the surrounding buildings. Enjoy your vacation.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This place is amazing. They are doing a good job of restoring it but much is still preserved. You are allowed to walk through and park for free. It appeared to have a self guided tour you could connect to via a QR code with your phone. Beautiful views, intriguing passages, and helpful resources with English translation.
