★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Without a doubt the single biggest disappointment of our visit to Palermo. Not worth a cent unless you're REALLY into modern art...and even then you're pushing it. This'll put you out 5 Euros and even half the art gallery is closed to the public; absolutely criminal that they're continuing to charge money for entry as there's literally nothing to see in this place.
Sant'Elia Palace is a beautifully designed, built and externally maintained piece of architecture in the heart of the city. Having survived heavy bombing during the Second World War, it's a miracle so much of it is left. I got great joy from looking at it *from outside*.
What a pity it is, then, that once you get inside the photos and publicity on here are completely misleading and the entire building is in fact nothing but ugly white-washed plywood walls, locked doors, badly restored corridors and ultra modernist artwork hap-hazardly placed over original the most beautiful 18th century frescos and carved features.
Simply put, if you're even the vaguest bit interested in history or architecture, please do yourself a favour and visit one of the countless FREE or cheaper palaces scattered around the city which are much more lovingly presented than this. Attached are photos of the very *best* parts of this palace..............yeah.
