★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Cerro al Volturno (Cièrrë in molisano) è un comune italiano di 1.248 abitanti della provincia di Isernia in Molise, a circa 20 km dal confine con l'Abruzzo. Il comune è chiamato anche semplicemente Cerro per via del suo territorio ricco di boschi di querce, tra le quali spicca il Cerro, Quercus cerris. Il territorio Cerrese è ai confini col Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, ed è immerso nel verde.
Il paese fu di fondazione dei Sanniti (III secolo a.C.), di cui rimangono fortificazioni presso il monte Santa Croce. Nell'epoca medievale il colle del borgo attuale fu colonizzato da dei contadini (IX secolo), dato che il feudo dipendeva dalla vicina Abbazia di San Vincenzo al Volturno. Fu costruito il castello Normanno, che poi verrà ampliato nel XV secolo dalla famiglia Pandone. Neo secoli successivi il feudo fu di varie famiglie, inclusi i Carafa.
Nel 1811 il borgo passò al territorio di Benevento, e solo nel 1861 fu compreso di nuovo nel Molise, prima legato al territorio di Piedimonte Matese, e poi alla zona di Castellone Volturno, ossia Castel San Vincenzo. Dal 1970 fa parte della provincia di Isernia.(Wikipedia)
 Cerro al Volturno (Cièrrë in Molise) is an Italian town of 1,248 inhabitants in the province of Isernia in Molise, about 20 km from the border with Abruzzo. The municipality is also simply called Cerro because of its territory rich in oak woods, among which the Cerro, Quercus cerris, stands out. The Cerrese territory is on the border with the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, and is surrounded by greenery.
The town was founded by the Samnites (3rd century BC), of which fortifications remain at Mount Santa Croce. In medieval times the hill of the present village was colonized by peasants (9th century), since the fiefdom depended on the nearby Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno. The Norman castle was built, which was later enlarged in the 15th century by the Pandone family. In the following centuries the feud belonged to various families, including the Carafa.
In 1811 the village passed to the territory of Benevento, and only in 1861 was it included again in Molise, first linked to the territory of Piedimonte Matese, and then to the area of Castellone Volturno, i.e. Castel San Vincenzo. It has been part of the province of Isernia since 1970. (Wikipedia)
