As a tour guide I had the extraordinary opportunity, when it was open, to visit the Church of Santa Maria Antiqua and also to bring tourists, who were amazed by what they saw. And how to blame them ... After all, the Church of Santa Maria Antiqua is a building, or what remains of it including frescoes, which fully represents the polychrome and style typical of the Middle Ages, a period often mistreated but which has left us many beautiful artists. In this case we have a church, brought to light after painstaking restoration work that lasted years, dating back to around the 6th - 7th century, a church that certainly must have been beautiful and with the walls completely covered with frescoes. And it is extraordinary to see still today numerous remains of paintings that are also brought back to life through new visual technologies. A combination of modernity and the Middle Ages that makes the place unique. One of the strong points of the Church of Santa Maria Antiqua (which was buried by an earthquake in the 9th century and which was rediscovered only 1100 years later) is the small chapel to the left of the altar where we see a beautiful painted Crucifixion in which Christ is dressed in a long blue dress typical of oriental iconography. At the time, around the seventh century AD, there were many monks or scholars who moved here from the East, bringing with them a breath of fresh air in style and more. And this little fresco is capable of showing us all this.

Spettacolare. Presente su tutti i libri d'arte Γ¨ un capolavoro che in gran parte ci ha riportato affreschi tipici dell'arte e del gusto bizantini a Roma. Gli stessi artisti forse sono di Costantinopoli.
Spectacular. Present in all art books is a masterpiece that largely brought back frescoes typical of Byzantine art and taste in Rome. Perhaps the artists themselves are from Constantinople.

It has only been open for a very short time and in fact I did not know it existed. It is a little secluded from the route but absolutely not to be missed, offering the ecstasy of the vision of a very rare and ancient example of Byzantine art, discovered only a century ago but returned to the public only a few years ago. The polychromy of the frescoes, the preciousness of the floor mosaics, the richness of the scenes represented on the walls are impressive. Some film reconstructions reconstruct and project the figures on the walls. Very large spaces and an extraordinary example of recovery. Do not miss it and do not miss the splendid preserved sarcophagi. Look at the photos and other reviews on Rome and its wonders that I have done, especially on the treasures of the forum.

Santa Maria Antiqua is a Roman Catholic Marian church in Rome, Italy, built in the 5th century in the Forum Romanum, and for a long time the monumental access to the Palatine imperial palaces. Located at the foot of the Palatine Hill, Santa Maria Antiqua is the oldest Christian monument in the Roman Forum. The church contains the earliest Roman depiction of Santa Maria Regina, the Virgin Mary as a Queen, from the 6th century. Built in the middle of the 5th century on the north-western slope of the Palatine Hill, Santa Maria Antiqua is the earliest and most significant Christian monument within the Roman Forum. The church contains a unique collection of wall paintings from the 6th to late 8th century. The discovery of these paintings have given many theories on the development of early medieval art and given distinctive beliefs in archaeology. The church was abandoned in the 9th century after an earthquake buried the buildings; it remained sealed for over 1000 years until its rediscovery in the early 20th century. Therefore, Santa Maria Antiqua represents a key element for the understanding of the cultural and urban development of the Roman Forum from Antiquity into the first centuries of the Christian period. From 1980 to 2012 the monument was closed to the general public and limited to scholars who applied for a special visit. Following a conservation program carried out by the Soprintendenza per il Patrimonio Storico in partnership with World Monuments Fund, the church is now open for tours. Santa Maria Antiqua is a ruined church in the Roman Forum, and is part of the Foro Romano e Palatino archaeological site which requires a ticket purchase in order to get access inside. The church itself is not always open to the public, owing to ongoing excavations which began 2004 under the aegis of the World Monuments Fund. Thanks to centuries of sealing off, its walls showcase a cycle of beautiful colourful frescoes depicting the Virgin Mary and Infant Jesus, popes, saints, and martyrs, thus forming one of the largest and most important collections of pre-iconoclastic Roman and Byzantine art in the world. These frescoes date to a period of iconoclasm when in the East, figures in churches were destroyed. Pope John VII used this church in the early 8th century as the seat of the bishop of Rome.

Very beautiful chiesa. Be careful if it is opened, because it's not somedays. It is a 6th century church, located in Rome. Exhibition is big and educational. I recommend to visit it as one of the most beautiful places in Rome.

My highlight on my trip to the Forum, and I accidentallystumbled on it! The art is amazing, and the history behind the church is fascinating. The experience is enhanced by digital features showing the development of the art. It's a must see, despite it being secluded!
