Dopo varie vicende storiche la chiesa e il monastero passarono all’Ordine Salesiano dei Sacri Cuori fondato dal sacerdote Filippo Smaldone apostolo dei ciechi e dei sordomuti, che nel 1885 aprì per loro il primo Istituto a Lecce. Qui si dedicò alla cura dei sordomuti e dei ciechi con umana bontà e profondo impegno cristiano. La sua opera, oltre a Lecce, si estese anche a Bari, ed a tutt’oggi è ancora fervente sul territorio. Dopo la sua santificazione, la chiesa delle Carmelitane scalze è divenuta Santuario San Filippo Smaldone e ogni giorno resta aperta dalle suore che venerano il SS. Sacramento e il corpo del Santo esposto sull’altare in una teca. Nel secondo piano del Convento, nelle antiche stanze vissute da San Filippo, è stato allestito un museo che conserva pregevoli manufatti, arredi ed oggetti legati alla vita del Santo e al Convento delle Carmelitane scalze. Among the many jewels enclosed in the historic center of Lecce, a church (1600) with an adjoining Teresian Convent of the Discalced Carmelites remains almost unknown. After various historical events, the church and the monastery passed to the Salesian Order of the Sacred Hearts founded by the priest Filippo Smaldone, apostle of the blind and the deaf-mutes, who in 1885 opened for them the first Institute in Lecce. Here he dedicated himself to the care of the deaf-mutes and the blind with human goodness and deep Christian commitment. His work, in addition to Lecce, also extended to Bari, and still is still fervent in the area. After its sanctification, the church of the Discalced Carmelites has become San Filippo Smaldone Shrine and is open every day by the nuns who venerate the SS. E poi l'amorevole cura e lo zelo delle Suore Salesiane dei Sacri Cuori verso i luoghi in cui ha vissuto ed ha prestato la sua Opera il "loro" San Filippo Smaldone, di cui proseguono la missione di supporto ai sordi di Lecce e di molte altre parti del Mondo. A real "candy" just out of the tourist flow but that is really worth a visit. And then the loving care and zeal of the Salesian Sisters of the Sacred Hearts towards the places where "their" Saint Philip Smaldone lived and lent his work, whose mission to support the deaf in Lecce and many other parts of the world.
