★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Bella chiesa con annesse catacombe che sono un piacevole sorpresa. All'interno della chiesa si trova un altare circondato da 4 colonne. In età normanna lo spazio centrale attorno all'altare fu modificato da 4 pilastri che hanno incorporato i capitelli con i simboli degli Evangelisti e iscrizioni del Vangelo. Le pareti presentano rovinatissime tracce di pitture. Dalla Basilica si discende per visitare le Catacombe di San Giovanni, le più recenti fra le siracusane (315-360), e in uso fino alla fine del V sec.
Molto bella e particolare è la cripta di San Marciano sotto la chiesa. La cripta è utilizzata anche oggi come luogo religioso sia da Cattolici sia da Ortodossi.
Beautiful church with attached catacombs which are a pleasant surprise. Inside the church there is an altar surrounded by 4 columns. In the Norman age the central space around the altar was modified by 4 pillars which incorporated the capitals with the symbols of the Evangelists and inscriptions from the Gospel. The walls show very ruined traces of paintings. From the Basilica we descend to visit the Catacombs of San Giovanni, the most recent of the Syracusan (315-360), and in use until the end of the 5th century.
Very beautiful and particular is the crypt of San Marciano under the church. The crypt is also used today as a religious place by both Catholics and Orthodox.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Mostly likely due to a language barrier, the staff provides disinformation and the whole group’s schedule was screwed.
We have been waiting a few hours for them to open the gates (hour more than communicated), but didn’t get a chance to enter the catacombs.
Verdict - if you don’t speak Italian, you better make them communicate via google translator.
