β β β β β This is a fascinating visit and you will discover a part of Ortigia you didn't believe existed. If there has been heavy rain, you can't access!

β β β β β Very sad to see the entrance of a Mikve hided between icons of Maria and Jesus...
The visit was organised by the (catholic) church and it was not objective at all. We just had the impression to have listened to a lot of lies. For instance, they were constantly speaking about the utilisation of the constructions by the church... But before the Catholic Church stole the premises (probably an old synagogue with its Mikve), it was a jewish place and we heard nothing about that (of course)... Then, they said they only discovered that it was a Jewish Mikve few months ago.... I just donβt believe that. There were Jewish inscriptions, everybody can know it was a Jewish construction, especially the Catholic Church..

β β β β β Awesome find! I wandered into the church because I like to wander aimlessly when I'm exploring and it was free. It turns out that what's under the church is quite the adventure. There are three underground levels, including a crypt, a bomb shelter and an ancient jewish ritual bath that uses the sunken aquifer. The church gives two tours a day in the morning and early evening (I went at 5 pm) for a donation. The tour guide was engaged and lively (they easily can make or break an experience, right??) and she gave remarks in both Italian and English. A super informative and fun experience.

β β β β β Totally unexpected and awesome: there are THREE levels under this church - Christian burial crypt, massive tunnels under the city that housed 10,000 people during WWII, and a Jewish purification bath. The tour is donation based and lasts about 15 minutes. Very cool experience, especially once you realize that there are massive tunnels under the city!

β β β β β A small unassuming Church with a particular secret.. the level's below are the real draw for tourists visiting and are definitely worth the time (it's not a long tour.. maybe 20-30 minutes). Tour's are given frequently through the day in Italian and English (possibly other languages but I don't know for sure). We definitely thought it was worth the visit.

β β β β β Pretty cool random discovery where it led us down 3 levels below for a tour of the underground. The tour takes 10-15min offered in both Italian and English and the fee is donation based. While worth the time!

β β β β β enthusiastic young local guides lead free half hour tours underground Ortigia Siracusa, to 3 subterranean levels which include frescos and an ancient freshwater well; all of which is connected by tunnels that lead to 40 other entrances connecting all the churches of the city from ancient times
