Tale laghetto fu aperto nel 1851 sul lato che confinava col mare dal Re di Napoli Ferdinando II di Borbone per trasformarlo in porto. La chiesa è a pianta esagonale, presenta una cupola ribassata e un interno dal gusto tipicamente toscano con l'alternanza di cornici e modanature in pietra e di ampie aree intonacate bianche. Впрочем, в текущем состоянии эта церковь более напоминает просторную беседку, чем культовое сооружение. Probably, it is difficult to find such a bright and light church anywhere. However, in its current state, this church looks more like a spacious gazebo than a religious building.

Probabilmente lo spazio centrale si apriva su 5 cappelle perimetrali descritte dalle fonti storiche e oggi non più esistenti: questo spiegherebbe anche l'anomala presenza di ampie finestre ad arco (originari varchi d'accesso alle cappelle). L'architettura si attribuisce all'arch. Jacopo Barozzi, detto il Vignola. Fu costruita da Dionisio Basso per destinarla al figlio Pompeo, sacerdote, e aperta al culto nel 1564. ----------------- Consiglio personale: Vi consiglio di farvi delle fotografie qui, si può godere di un panorama incredibile, curiosissima del resto, perché non assomiglia per nulla ad una chiesa, ma ad un Mausoleo. Probably the central space opened on 5 perimeter chapels described by historical sources and no longer existing today: this would also explain the anomalous presence of large arched windows (original access passages to the chapels). The architecture is attributed to the architect. Jacopo Barozzi, known as Vignola.
