Nel corso dei secoli fu più volte ampliata, modificata e abbellita, sia a causa di frequenti terremoti e incendi, sia dai vescovi della diocesi che vollero ingrandirla e renderla maestosa. Alle origini consisteva in un piccolo edificio di forma rettangolare che occupava l’attuale zona presbiteriale; aveva un abside e tre navate, con orientamento est-ovest. It was built in 1009 on the town's acropolis, next to the castle. Over the centuries it was repeatedly enlarged, modified and embellished, both because of frequent earthquakes and fires, and by the bishops of the diocese who wanted to enlarge it and make it majestic. At the beginning it consisted of a small rectangular building that occupied the current presbytery area; it had an apse and three naves, with east-west orientation.
