★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore domina con la sua mole l'intero paesaggio della città di Nicosia. Il prospetto della chiesa, tipicamente barocco, non è mai stato ultimato. La facciata, a due ordini, è animata da tre aperture in corrispondenza delle navate, tra cui spicca il grandioso portale principale, tardo barocco e finemente scolpito, sormontato da una grande finestra rettangolare. L'interno è a pianta basilicale a tre navate inframezzate da arcate a tutto sesto su pilastri cruciformi e transetto aggettante. Una grande cupola su pennacchi di accordo a un tamburo ottagonale, si erge sull'incrocio dei bracci del transetto. L'interno presenta ricchi stucchi e un grande affresco nel catino absidale. La copertura è a volta a botte nella navata centrale e a cupolette ribassate nelle navate laterali.
The church of Santa Maria Maggiore dominates with its size the entire landscape of the city of Nicosia. The typically baroque facade of the church has never been completed. The facade, with two orders, is animated by three openings in correspondence of the naves, among which the grandiose main portal, late Baroque and finely sculpted, surmounted by a large rectangular window stands out. The interior has a basilica plan with three naves interspersed with round arches on cruciform pillars and projecting transept. A large dome on plumes of accord with an octagonal drum stands on the cross of the arms of the transept. The interior has rich stuccos and a large fresco in the apsidal basin. The roof is barrel vaulted in the central nave and lowered domes in the side aisles.
