Urgh more disgusting opulence and wealth of the Catholic Church on display. They have zero dignity even begging for 2 euros to illuminate the Caravaggio. Sell some of your gold and art and FEED THE POOR

This is well worth your time and attention. Beautiful and no crowds to speak of. Services are still held and on the day we were there a wedding was about to take place so it's not always open to the public. Stunning side chapels. Awe inspiring.

One of Rome's most spectacular churches filled with outstanding artworks by Raphael, Bernini, Bramante and Pinturrichio, amongst others, and not just the exquisite works by Caravaggio in the Cappella Cerasi.

Santa Maria del Popolo was commissioned by Sixtus IV in 1472. After his death in 1484, the pope’s family chapel, the Della Rovere Chapel (first on the right), was frescoed by Pinturicchio. In 1503, Sixtus IV’s nephew Giuliano became Pope Julius II and had Bramante build a new apse. Pinturicchio was called in again to paint its vaults with Sibyls and Apostles framed by freakish beasts. In 1513, Raphael created the Chigi Chapel (second on the left) – a Renaissance fusion of the sacred and profane – for the banker Agostino Chigi. Bernini later added the statues of Daniel and Habakkuk. In the Cerasi Chapel, left of the altar, are two Caravaggios: The Crucifixion of St. Peter and The Conversion of St. Paul.

Exceptional beautiful church. This one is very simple for roman standards, and not much visited as slightly off the beaten path. But the two Caravaggio paintings are beautiful, as is the one from pintoriccio. Another frescoe from his workshop is equally worth to be visited . There are also two statue by Bernini and a Chapel from Raphael. The church is not always open !
