The name San Giovanni was certainly taken from an ancient chapel or devotional shrine, but we have not been able to give a plausible explanation to the curious term "Pedata". The construction of this tower was decided in 1582, but carried out only after 1608 due to lack of funds. After a series of tenders and renewals of tenders by the Regia Camera for the construction of more towers, offers and discounts for the various interested parties, the construction of this was assigned, by deed of 9 August 1582, to Marco Schero from Lecce who probably did not obtain the money advances agreed within the established times, completed it only after 1608. Square-plan tower, "Typical of the Kingdom", the original quadrangular embankment body (10.40 m on each side) and the small window on the sea side and on both sides of the coast remain. It has undergone many restorations, and by now reached by the many modern buildings, it has partly lost the "magic" still perceptible by observing photos from the early 1900s. The counter-scarp crowning, defined by a continuous bull on the three lead-ways (included) for each side and the parapet to the roof terrace, have been almost completely rebuilt. The substantial sentry box of origin has been significantly reduced. At the access the mountain side, subsequently opened in the thickness of the base, under the original partially walled drawbridge, a new access on the north coast side was added. In the past, almost certainly "a breach opening towards the sea allowed an exit that is now occluded from the level of the square" as Vittorio Faglia writes. The tower consists of two floors communicating via a wall staircase.
