★ ★ ★ ★ ★ L'Edicola di San Gerardo, che i Potentini chiamano familiarmente “San Gerardo di Marmo”, è un tempietto che sorge in Piazza Matteotti, Al suo interno si conserva la statua del santo omonimo, patrono della città. Come recita un’epigrafe sul lato destro del santo, l’edicola sarebbe stata realizzata nel 1865, per opera dello scultore potentino Antonio Busciolano (1823-1871), o di suo fratello Michele (1825-1894).
L'edicola ripropone la facciata di un edificio a cupola, chiamato “La Machina”, che veniva eretto sulla Piazza – in occasione della festa del santo patrono – quale sfondo alle esibizioni della banda musicale. La struttura presenta una pianta semicircolare, chiusa sul fondo da una parete continua. Sul basamento a gradoni poggiano cinque colonne con fusto scanalato che sorreggono architravi marmoree decorate da angioletti e rose in rilievo. La parete di fondo si divide in tre parti: quella centrale è formata da una vetrata policroma, su cui poggiano due colonne che inquadrano la statua del santo; quelle laterali portano due iscrizioni: a destra è ricordata la costruzione dell’edicola e la dedica a San Gerardo, mentre a sinistra sono ricordate l'invasione dei briganti nel 1809 e l'insurrezione anti austriaca del 18 agosto 1860.
The Aedicule of San Gerardo, which the Potentines familiarly call "San Gerardo di Marmo", is a small temple that stands in Piazza Matteotti. Inside is the statue of the homonymous saint, patron saint of the city. As an epigraph on the right side of the saint states, the aedicule was built in 1865, by the sculptor Antonio Busciolano (1823-1871), or by his brother Michele (1825-1894).
The newsstand re-proposes the facade of a domed building, called “La Machina”, which was erected on the square - on the occasion of the patron saint's feast - as a backdrop to the performances of the musical band. The structure has a semicircular plan, closed at the bottom by a continuous wall. On the stepped base rest five columns with a fluted shaft that support marble architraves decorated with little angels and roses in relief. The back wall is divided into three parts: the central one is made up of a polychrome glass window, on which rest two columns that frame the statue of the saint; the lateral ones bear two inscriptions: on the right the construction of the aedicule and the dedication to San Gerardo are remembered, while on the left the invasion of brigands in 1809 and the anti-Austrian insurrection of August 18, 1860 are remembered.
