The bronze statue is the work of the Canadian sculptor Timothy P. Schmalz who donated it to the Holy Spirit Hospital in Rome in 2004. It represents "Jesus beggar" as evidenced by the hole on the hand left by the nail of the cross. The title of the work is: "Whatsoever you do" from the verse of the Gospel of Matthew: "Truly I tell you: every time you have done these things to one of these younger brothers of mine, you have done it to me" ( Matthew 25:40).

The statues are made of bronze and are part of the cycle dedicated to the Gospel according to Matthew, conceived during the extraordinary Jubilee of mercy (2015) . And they interpret the following verses: • "I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me drink". • "I was sick and you visited me". The cycle also includes: • "I was naked and you dressed me." (At the basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli), • "I was in prison and you came to visit me." (At the basilica of San Paolo). • "I was a stranger and you welcomed me" (At the basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina). NOTE: In 2019 a monumental and suggestive composition by the same artist entitled "Monumento al Migrante" was inaugurated in nearby St. Peter's Square.
