★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I enjoyed visiting this cathedral, but I must say Lucca's historical art tastes borders on the macabre. I'm sure there's a clear reason if I only dig into their past. The cathedral was 3€ when I visited, but I opted for the 9€ ticket which gives you access to the museum and the bell tower. It's the first cathedral we've been in with skulls everywhere. And I've never seen a church put Jesus in a golden birdcage, but that's essentially what they've done. I'm sure I'm angering some by describing it this way, but that's really how it feels.
The museum continued the macabre collection with the most detailed heads of John the Baptist on a platter I've ever seen. It also houses an impressive set of gold accessories for the robe of Christ, as well as a crown.
The bell tower is an easier climb than Giotto in Firenze, but has its own challenges. The first story is all stone, and very uneven, the railing is almost required. The final segment is a steel grate staircase, meaning you can see through the steps to far below. It's a challenge if you're weird with heights it could be difficult. If you are afraid of heights, I feel you won't be able to complete this climb. But the views at the top are nice if you can handle it.
It was rather enjoyable.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Cathedral of Lucca that contains the oldest wood crucifix in the world, even older than the current church, which is dated around the xth century.
It is a monument ever so full of esoteric mysticism and beautiful classical art.
Must visit.

Fantastic paintings, one from Tintoretto.
Right hand before the entrance a finger-labyrinth carved in marble.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ As others have said, the view from the campanile is spectacular. There's a cutout in the "suicide guard" to the right when looking north where you can take photos without the metal bars marring your pictures. Also nice view of the cathedral's front columns from the level halfway up to the top.
