★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La Chiesa di San Pietro a Majella, risalente al XIV secolo, fu realizzata per volontà di Carlo II d’Angiò e fu dedicata a Pietro del Morrone, successivamente noto come papa Celestino V.
Subì diversi accorgimenti, prima su richiesta di Roberto d’Angiò, poi di Alfonso I d’Aragona. Dalle originarie fattezze gotiche assunse con il tempo caratteristiche propriamente barocche, che furono successivamente recuperate, com’è il caso degli archi a sesto acuto del soffitto.
I principali dipinti che la adornano, opere del Mattia Preti, sono dedicate a Celestino V e a Santa Caterina d’Alessandria. Ad essi si affiancano, tra le altre, opere dello Stanzione, del Vaccaro e del Fanzago.
The Church of San Pietro a Majella, dating back to the 14th century, was built at the behest of Charles II of Anjou and was dedicated to Pietro del Morrone, later known as Pope Celestino V.
It underwent several precautions, first at the request of Robert of Anjou, then of Alfonso I of Aragon. From the original Gothic features it assumed with the time properly baroque characteristics, which were later recovered, as is the case of the pointed arches of the ceiling.
The main paintings that adorn it, works by Mattia Preti, are dedicated to Celestino V and Santa Caterina d'Alessandria. They are flanked, among others, by works by Stanzione, Vaccaro and Fanzago.
