Interesting monument with a rather troubled history. Currently not open to visitors as it is closed most of the time

This little church near Corso Magenta has been recently renovated. I recommend a visit to admire the interior and to gather you for those who want a moment of meditation.

Mentioned already in 1259 as the parish church of the Porte Vercellina quarter (Porta Vercellina, the quarter near the western city gates in ancient Milan), the church of Saint Nicholas (San Nicolao) was reconstructed in 1659 by the design of the architect Girolamo Quadrio in accordance with the canons of the Counter-Reformation, Catholic movement, which had as its goal to restore the prestige of the Catholic Church and faith. This is a small temple with a cylindrical vault, consisting of one nave, limited by pilasters with Ionic capitals. The high entablature goes along the entire perimeter of the hall and continues, without interruption, in the polygonal apse. Madonna della Misericordia (XIV century), sculpture made by masters of Campione school (the name of the school comes from the name of Campione d'Italia on the bank of Lugano), transferred to the church after the demolition of the western city gates Milan Porta Vercellina (Porta Vercellina), and the picture, presumably, hands of Massimo Stanzione, a Baroque painter, depicting Nicholas (San Nicola di Bari) (1635). The facade of the church, repeatedly restored, is the creation of the Italian artist Giovanni Battista Padzhi (1660): on the wall, simply lined with bricks, imposed lesenes (vertical flat protrusions of the wall, having no base and capitals) of two architectural orders, Ionic and Corinthian, ending in a gable . In 1787 the church was closed, and during the Republic of Cisalpine (a subsidiary of the First French Republic, created in 1797 during the Napoleonic Wars in northern Italy) was used as a warehouse. It was subsequently restored and reopened to believers.

In a tiny street with the namesake of the same name that leads from Corso Magenta to Piazzale Cadorna, one comes across this miniature church (unknown to many) stuck between the buildings, which seems to want to hide shyly. The Church of Saints Nicola and Espedito, known as Chiesa di San Nicolao is an ancient church dating back to before 1259 among the parishes of Porta Vercellina with Catholic worship. The narrow and high facade with terracotta bricks is the work of Giovanni Battista Paggi. The baroque interior in a single nave with chapels on the sides is the work of Gerolamo Quadrio. Important works inside the church: a statue dating back to 1300 of the Madonna and Child which was originally placed on the ancient Porta Vercellina by Azzone Visconti. A wooden statue of San Michele from the 19th century, a painting of San Nicola di Bari attributed to Massimo Stanzione and a wooden crucifix from the 14th century. In a lateral niche there is a wooden statue of San Espedito di Melitene, a Christian martyr of the fourth century. After a long restoration the church was reopened to the public, resuming its religious functions.

Small church that is not easy to find. It is located in via San Nicolao, near the very popular Corso Magenta. It is nestled between old houses and shops yet dates back to the 13th century. Recently refurbished and open to the faithful, it has a welcoming even if small interior. The external façade does not invite you to enter but some works placed inside are worthy of a thorough visit or a moment of meditation taking advantage of the tranquility of the environment. Some frescoes have been revived, the floors restored and the works of art enhanced, greatly improving the visual impact. For those who visit Milan it can be a visit goal outside the tourist canons as well as a place where you can rest for a few minutes.
