Delle opere pittoriche di un tempo oggi restano alcuni frammenti sulle pareti laterali e un intero ciclo nell’abside. Gli affreschi furono realizzati da Cristoforo di Bindoccio, detto il Malabarba, e da Meo di Pero, entrambi artisti senesi operanti nel XIV secolo. The building looks like a typical Franciscan church, characterized by simple, essential lines and admirable frescoes depicting the life of the saint. Of the pictorial works of the past, today some fragments remain on the side walls and an entire cycle in the apse. The frescoes were made by Cristoforo di Bindoccio, called Malabarba, and by Meo di Pero, both Sienese artists operating in the 14th century.

Conservata e restaurata in modo eccellente, conseva uno splendido ciclo di affreschi sulla vita del santo nell'abside. Splendide ope d'arte tra cui spicca un presepe. Anche la facciata è improntata all'austerità medicante: solo il portale vi introduce una nota decorativa. All'interno si trovano importanti resti di affreschi trecenteschi, soprattutto nel presbiterio, con Annunciazione, Deposizione, Orazione nell'orto, Stimmate di san Francesco e santi, dovuti a due pittori senesi della seconda metà del Trecento, Cristoforo di Bindoccio e Meo di Piero. Nell'altare sinistro la Madonna della Misericordia e i Santi Sebastiano e Bernardino, della bottega di Luca Signorelli. La sua forma è romanica con un occhio sopra l'unica porta di ingresso e con le pareti interne, specie nella parte absidale, affrescate con scene della vita di San Francesco. Dopo quelli della Basilica Superiore di Assisi e di Chiusi della Verna qui si trova uno dei più completi cicli di di vita di San Francesco. Tra gli affreschi segnaliamo quello di Binduccio Malabarba raffigurante San Francesco che riceve le Stimmate a Chiusi della Verna. Dopo i restauri del 2002 la chiesa è stata arricchita da quattro opere di arte eseguite dallo scultore senese Massimo Lippi. l'altare in tre grandi blocchi di pietra di Rapolano, la cattedra episcopale, la Croce e l'Ambone in bronzo. Merita decisamente una visita nell'ambito di un'escursione nel caratteristico centro storico di Pienza.
