★ ★ ★ ★ ★ L’abbazia di San Michele si trova a Monticchio (frazione di Rionero in Vulture), sulle pendici del Monte Vulture. L’Abbazia fu fondata dai Benedettini nel X secolo. Essa fu costruita su una grotta scavata nel tufo, nei pressi della quale sono stati ritrovati alcuni depositi votivi risalenti al IV-III secolo a.c. Appartengono al complesso anche i ruderi del convento di Sant’Ippolito risalente al X-XI secolo.
 The Abbey of San Michele is located in Monticchio (a hamlet of Rionero in Vulture), on the slopes of Mount Vulture. The Abbey was founded by the Benedictines in the 10th century. It was built on a cave dug into the tuff, near which some votive deposits dating back to the IV-III century BC have been found. The ruins of the convent of Sant’Ippolito dating back to the 10th-11th century also belong to the complex.

Evocative place with itineraries in faith and nature and a splendid view of the twin lakes. Too bad for the poorly cared for undergrowth.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ L'abbazia di San Michele Arcangelo è un'abbazia che sorge a Monticchio, la cui costruzione risale all'VIII secolo d.C., intorno ad una grotta abitata da monaci basiliani.[1]
Fu eretta su una grotta scavata nel tufo, nei pressi della quale sono stati ritrovati depositi votivi risalenti al IV-III secolo a.C. L'abbazia passò poi ai benedettini (che la abbandonarono nel 1456), ai cappuccini (che fondarono una biblioteca e un lanificio) e, nel 1782 all'ordine militare costantiniano, che ne fu proprietario fino al 1866. L'intero complesso è costituito da un convento a più piani, una chiesa settecentesca e la cappella di San Michele arcangelo. La grotta dell'Angelo dedicata a san Michele è adornata da affreschi risalenti alla metà dell'XI secolo ed era il luogo dove si riunivano in preghiera i monaci italo-greci che anticamente abitavano la zona. Da qui è possibile avere un suggestivo panorama dei laghi di Monticchio.
The abbey of San Michele Arcangelo is an abbey that rises in Monticchio, whose construction dates back to the 8th century AD, around a cave inhabited by Basilian monks. [1]
It was built on a cave excavated in the tuff, near which votive deposits dating back to the IV-III century BC have been found. The abbey then passed to the Benedictines (who abandoned it in 1456), to the Capuchins (who founded a library and a wool mill) and, in 1782 to the Constantinian military order, which was its owner until 1866. The whole complex is constituted from a multi-storey convent, an eighteenth-century church and the chapel of St. Michael the Archangel. The cave of the Angel dedicated to Saint Michael is adorned with frescoes dating back to the middle of the 11th century and was the place where the Greek-Italian monks who once lived in the area used to gather in prayer. From here it is possible to have a suggestive panorama of the lakes of Monticchio.
