★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Eretta nel 1200, l'imponente, massiccia chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista - alias Sant'Agostino in quanto da sempre gestita dai frati agostiniani - è la più antica di Rimini. L'interno dell'edificio, profondamente ristrutturato nel corso dei secoli, si presente sotto una duplice, affascinante veste: barocca e medievale. Se da un lato, infatti, spicca per la fastosa magnificenza tipica del Sei-Settecento, dall'altro conserva, specie dietro l'altare, uno spettacolare ciclo di affreschi della Scuola Riminese del Trecento, Scuola che si ispirava al grande Giotto. Gli affreschi, tra l'altro, "coperti" durante i vari lavori di restauro, sono venuti alla luce in seguito al terremoto del 1916. In ogni caso, la chiesa è davvero sorprendente e merita indubbiamente una visita accurata.
Built in 1200, the imposing, massive church of San Giovanni Evangelista - aka Sant'Agostino as it has always been managed by the Augustinian friars - is the oldest in Rimini. The interior of the building, deeply renovated over the centuries, is presented under a double, fascinating guise: baroque and medieval. If on the one hand, in fact, it stands out for the sumptuous magnificence typical of the seventeenth-eighteenth century, on the other hand it preserves, especially behind the altar, a spectacular cycle of frescoes of the fourteenth-century Rimini School, a school that was inspired by the great Giotto. The frescoes, among other things, "covered" during the various restoration works, came to light following the earthquake of 1916. In any case, the church is truly surprising and undoubtedly deserves a thorough visit.
