★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Capolavoro d'arte gotico-catalana ed unico elemento architettonico sopravvissuto al catastrofico terremoto del 1693. Un magnifico portale che costituiva l'ingresso all'originario Duomo di San Giorgio che, evidentemente, doveva presentarsi maestoso e riccamente decorato. Edificato probabilmente verso la fine del Trecento durante il dominio dei Chiaramonte, è di una bellezza che mozza letteralmente il fiato: luminoso calcare rosato; sette colonnine a fascio che sostengono nove archi leggermente acuti; interspazi decorati da raffinati intagli floreali e faunistici; il vertice dell'ultimo arco converge verso l'alto con un disegno che culmina in una croce floreale. Ai lati due losanghe contenenti sculture che raffigurano l'aquila, simbolo della città di Ragusa. Al centro San Giorgio a cavallo che uccide il drago e libera la principessa Sirena inginocchiata. Un'emozione, soprattutto di notte.
Masterpiece of Gothic-Catalan art and the only architectural element that survived the catastrophic earthquake of 1693. A magnificent portal that constituted the entrance to the original Cathedral of San Giorgio which, evidently, must have been majestic and richly decorated. Probably built towards the end of the fourteenth century during the rule of the Chiaramonte, it is of a beauty that literally takes your breath away: bright pink limestone; seven beam columns supporting nine slightly acute arches; interspaces decorated with refined floral and faunal carvings; the vertex of the last arch converges upwards with a design that culminates in a floral cross. On the sides two lozenges containing sculptures depicting the eagle, symbol of the city of Ragusa. In the center, St. George on horseback killing the dragon and freeing the kneeling mermaid princess. An emotion, especially at night.
